Microsoft Hires Key Apple Engineer to Design Server Chips

Microsoft employed a key Apple engineer to design its personal chips for its servers, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing folks with information of the matter.

The software program big employed chip business veteran Mike Filippo, who labored for Apple for over two years, the report stated.

Microsoft is engaged on in-house processors for the servers operating its cloud-computing companies and Surface line of non-public computer systems, a supply informed Reuters in December 2020.

The cloud computing heavy-weight depends closely on Intel and Advanced Micro Devices to provide chips for its Azure cloud computing companies in addition to Surface PCs.

The transfer to rent Filippo implies that Microsoft is accelerating a push to create homegrown chips for its servers powering Azure cloud computing companies, the report added.

Filippo, who began his profession as a CPU designer at chip designer AMD in 1996, has beforehand labored at Intel and UK-based ARM earlier than becoming a member of Apple, in line with his LinkedIn profile.
